Ewan thrown from his motorcycle? Not true!

20 December 2013

Numerous “news” sites have been reporting that Ewan has been thrown off his motorcycle: Ewan McGregor thrown from motorbike – Scottish actor Ewan Mcgregor narrowly escaped injury when he was thrown from his motorcycle in a road accident on Wednesday. This headline has been tweeted and retweeted in various languages since Wednesday, and it’s completely false and misleading.

This non-story appeared following Ewan’s tweet which said:

“I'm (sic) wasn't knocked down but bumped into. Just keep your eyes in your mirrors. Bikers are vulnerable. And very cool.”

Unfortunately, the only reason why these “news” sites do this is pure greed. They want as many people going to their sites which contain advertisements, and those sites get money for every visitor they get.

August: Osage County will hit movie theatres later than expected

18 Dec 2013
By Michael Gioia

The film adaptation of Tracy Letts’ Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning drama August: Osage County, starring Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, will no longer hit theatres on Christmas Day, a representative for the Weinstein Company confirmed to Playbill.com.

The 130-minute film, which received its premiere screening at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, will be released in New York and Los Angeles Dec. 27. It will open in additional markets Jan. 3, 2014, with a wide-release date set for Jan. 10, 2014.

Directed by John Wells, the darkly comic drama is a large ensemble piece (with three sisters at its core) set in a rambling house in Oklahoma. Two-time Tony Award winner Letts (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?) also penned the screenplay.

Oscar winner Roberts (The Normal Heart, Erin Brockovich) plays Barbara, the oldest Weston daughter, with Streep (The Devil Wears Prada, The Iron Lady) as cancer-stricken drug addict Violet Weston.

The cast also features Sam Shepard (Heartless), Oscar nominee Juliette Lewis, Ewan McGregor (West End’s Little Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs, Moulin Rouge!), Olivier Award winner Benedict Cumberbatch (Frankenstein, Sherlock), Tony nominee Margo Martindale (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof), Oscar winner Chris Cooper (Adaptation), Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding) and Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin (The Miracle Worker, Little Miss Sunshine).

The Weinstein Company film is a Jean Doumanian/Smokehouse production produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov, Jean Doumanian and Steve Traxler. Claire Rudnick Polstein is the executive producer.

Ewan McGregor pays primary school children surprise visit while filming in Hampstead

Friday, November 22, 2013
By Imogen Blake

Teachers at a Hampstead primary school were more excited than the children when Hollywood heartthrob Ewan McGregor stopped by during the filming of his latest blockbuster.

The Scottish actor, 42, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequels, dropped in on St Luke’s Church of England Primary School in Kidderpore Avenue last week during a break in filming.

He was in Hampstead shooting his new movie Mortdecai, based on the trilogy of novels by Kyril Bonfiglioli, about an art dealer. Johnny Depp and Belsize Park resident Gwyneth Paltrow also star.

Headteacher Gill Tyler said: “We’ve never had a film star here before. Some of the younger ones were just thinking ‘Who’s standing here?’ but the older ones knew he was Obi-Wan Kenobi. Children of that age tend to catch on with the excitement.”

Some of the children may not have known who the star was but the teachers definitely did, with some female staff members becoming very excited.

“It all happened very, very quickly,” Mrs Tyler said. “Someone brushed their hair a little bit more than usual but we didn’t get much notice so there wasn’t very much they could do.”

When the road was suddenly blocked off the day before the visit, teachers found out that the movie star was filming just yards away at Craxton Studios and asked the production manager if the film star could spare five minutes to meet the children.

Family man Mr McGregor was kind enough to oblige the swooning staff members, and popped into every classroom to ask what the children were learning.

Mrs Tyler then had a brainwave and asked the Trainspotting and Moulin Rouge! star if he would officially open their newly-built summer gazebo in the playground, which was finished during the October half-term.

A quick-thinking teacher found some blue ribbon in a drawer, tied it into a bow and handed Mr McGregor a pair of scissors to cut it at the makeshift ceremony in front of the gazebo.

Mrs Tyler said: “We had been thinking that we wanted something special and this just seemed ‘Wow!’ He really got on with the children and asked them about what they were learning and went into all the classrooms. It was so kind of him to take the time.”

AFM: Ewan McGregor, Zoe Saldana Join Don Cheadle’s Miles Davis Biopic

By Philiana Ng

Ewan McGregor and Zoe Saldana have joined Don Cheadle’s Miles Davis biopic Kill the Trumpet Player.

Kill the Trumpet Player centers on a few dangerous days in the life of Miles Davis (Cheadle), as he bursts out of his silent period and conspires with a Rolling Stone writer (McGregor) to steal back his music.

Cheadle will make his feature directorial debut from a screenplay co-written by Steven Baigelman.

BiFrost’s Daniel Wagner is financing and will produce with Robert Ogden Barnum, Cheadle and Lenore Zerman for Crescendo Productions, Darryl Porter and Vince Wilburn Jr. Executive producers are Pamela Hirsch, Cheryl Davis, Erin Davis, Cassian Elwes and Baigelman. Musician Herbie Hancock, a Davis collaborator, will also participate.

“Don is one of our generation’s greatest actors, and this is the role he was born to play. His take on the conventional biopic of one of music’s most celebrated icons is cinematic ’jazz’ and too unique to resist,” said Wagner in the announcement. “It fits naturally with BiFrost’s commitment to support talent and their passion projects, so we are thrilled to work with Don on his feature directorial debut.”

The long-gestating project was packaged by UTA, which is handling U.S. rights. IM Global is handling international distribution at the American Film Market.

At AFM, Cheadle dismissed the notion that Kill the Trumpet Player will be a traditional biopic.

“Let’s kill that term, OK? I hope with this film we can kill the biopic. This film won’t try to give a broad overview of Davis’ life and give short shrift to this man’s story,” he said at the time. “For us as creative people, the time of his life that was most interesting was the five years when he wasn’t playing, when he was silent. What was going on in his mind? And how did he come out of it and return to music?”

McGregor, repped by UTA, Sloane Offer and U.K.’s United Agents, will next be seen in crime drama Son of a Gun, and he is currently filming Mortdecai with Johnny Depp and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Saldana is repped by ICM Partners. She stars in Out of the Furnace and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy, Nina Simone biopic Nina and Infinitely Polar Bear.

Scots celeb Ewan McGregor stars in Macmillan art show thanks to Glasgow artist

13 Nov 2013
By Joe McGuire

Dominika with her painting of Ewan McGregor

A chance encounter with Ewan McGregor led to a Glasgow artist making a picture perfect charity donation.

After bumping into the Star Wars actor at the Merchant City Festival in July, Dominika Majowicz decided to capture the Scots actor on canvas.

And after spending four months working on the striking piece, she donated it to Macmillan Cancer Support’s annual art show.

Dominika, who lives in Yorkhill, said: “He was obviously in a rush, but he stopped and took the time to have a photo taken with me, which was so nice of him.

“I was seeking inspiration, and he was so friendly I decided to make him my next subject - I felt like I had a personal connection that helped me paint him.”

The piece was so well received at the art show, which has so far raised £2.5million for the cancer charity, that it sold for £1700 on the first night.

Dominika, 27, has two other portraits on display at the exhibition in Renfrew.

She decided to donate work to the charity’s show as she has personally been affected by the killer disease, having lost several members of her family.

Dominika, who studied at Glasgow School of Art, added: “Art should help people rather than just being associated with wealth.

“Taking part in the charity show makes you feel you’re doing something better than just selling your stuff.

Dominika meets McGregor at the Merchant City Festival

“I know Ewan does a lot of charity work so I hope he’d approve and like the fact that a chance meeting has helped people in need.”

A spokeswoman from Macmillan said they were extremely grateful to Dominika for her generous contribution.

She added: “Dominika has kindly agreed to give the entire proceeds of the sale of her Ewan McGregor portrait to us.

“That will go a long way to helping the art show raise a substantial sum of money for people with cancer and their friends and families.”

Ewan McGregor Set for Broadway Debut Next Year

October 31, 2013
By Gordon Cox

Because it’s never too early to start booking big-name stars for Broadway stints, the Roundabout Theater Company has set Ewan McGregor to make his Main Stem debut in its revival of “The Real Thing,” now set to open at the American Airlines Theater in October 2014.

Show was shifted from its previously scheduled spring slot at the American Airlines, one of the Roundabout’s three Broadway theaters. No title has been confirmed to replace “Real Thing” this season, but industry types have been working to fill the gap with a production of “Violet,” with Sutton Foster (“Anything Goes”) reprising the title role she played in Jeanine Tesori’s 1997 tuner in a much-lauded City Center Encores! presentation in July. Those details have yet to be locked in, but the title remains a good candidate to fill the slot.

McGregor, currently filming “Mortdecai” with Johnny Depp and Gwyneth Paltrow, has never appeared on a New York stage, although he won raves for his legit work in London in the Donmar Warehouse’s revival of “Guys and Dolls” in 2005 and in a 2007 Donmar production of “Othello” (in which he starred opposite Chiwetel Ejiofor).

Actor is the latest movie name to be drawn to the boards: Tom Hanks made his Rialto debut last season, while Daniel Craig returned to the Main Stem this season with the current sales juggernaut “Betrayal,” and Denzel Washington will be back in the spring with “A Raisin in the Sun.” Celeb-driven play revivals have become one of the more reliably profitable production models on Broadway, with demand maximized by the limited runs often dictated by stars’ busy schedules.

As a nonprofit, the Roundabout grapples with a different set of fiscal demands compared to commercial producers, but McGregor’s stint nonetheless seems poised to bring the theater company additional coin and buzz next season.

Tom Stoppard’s 1982 work “The Real Thing,” a play-within-a-play about a married playwright and the woman he falls for, hasn’t been on Broadway since 2000, in a transfer of a Donmar staging that starred Stephen Dillane and Jennifer Ehle. Sam Gold (“Seminar”) remains on board to direct the upcoming revival.

The current occupant of the American Airlines, the Roundabout’s production of “The Winslow Boy” starring Roger Rees, wraps up its run Dec. 1. Next up at the venue, “Machinal,” toplined by Rebecca Hall, starts perfs later that month and is scheduled to close in early March.

“The Real Thing” begins previews Oct. 2 prior to an Oct. 30, 2014, opening at the American Airlines. Production is skedded to end its limited run there Jan. 4, 2015.

Ewan McGregor And David Beckham Support UNICEF’s Commonwealth Games Initiative

July 22, 2013

The partnership aims to raise funds for UNICEF work in Commonwealth countries across the world, and hopes to make next summer’s sporting event a big moment for children, aiming to inspire and enable children to be the best they can be.

The news was unveiled by Olympic boxing champion Nicola Adams at Swinton Primary School in the east end of Glasgow, one of UNICEF’s Rights Respecting Schools. Nicola shared her own story with pupils, and listened to their hopes for the future.

“I am absolutely delighted to support this partnership and be part of the event this morning,” said Nicola. “It was great to meet the children and hear about their aspirations and what they need to be the best they can be. This is a fantastic collaboration which will reach out to every child in Scotland and much further afield.”

UNICEF Ambassador Ewan McGregor sent a message of support to the event: “I couldn’t be more pleased that Glasgow has been selected to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games and partner with UNICEF.”

“This partnership opens the door to helping transform children’s lives, both in my own country of Scotland, and in every Commonwealth nation. That’s a hugely exciting prospect.”

Fellow UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham also added his backing: "I am delighted to hear that UNICEF and Glasgow 2014 are to put children at the heart of the Commonwealth Games legacy. This partnership is an amazing opportunity for children around the world.

“Through the power of sport you can achieve so much and this great partnership will be no different. UNICEF leads the way in making sure that children have the opportunity to reach their true potential everywhere.” Source: UNICEF

Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor Eye Johnny Depp Crime Movie ‘Mortdecai’ (EXCLUSIVE)

July 24, 2013
Justin Kroll

Johnny Depp starrer “Mortdecai” is coming together quickly with eyes on an all-star cast as Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor are in talks to co-star with Depp.

Lionsgate is distributing and David Koepp is directing the crime drama.

“Mortdecai,” based on the three-part series of books by Kyril Bonfiglioli, follows Charles Mortdecai, an antihero art dealer and rogue who is in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.

After contract disputes over Whitey Bulger pic “Black Mass,” Depp moved quickly to line up his next project.

Andrew Lazar, Depp and Christi Dembrowski are producing. Eric Aronson wrote the “Mortdecai” script.

Erik Feig, Michael Paseornek, Gillian Bohrer and James Myers will oversee the project for the studio.

Lionsgate looks to be fast-tracking the project with a high-profile team after it languished for years in development limbo.

The film will probably go into production in the fourth quarter of this year, after Depp wraps production on the Disney pic “Into the Woods.”

Ewan McGregor in surprise visit to hospice kids

24 July 2013

Mr McGregor is a long-term supporter of the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (Chas).

He said: “There’s so much fun and laughter about the place and you can see how important it is for the children and their families.”

The actor was recently appointed an OBE for his services to charity and drama.

He made the journey to the hospice on his motorcycle with dad Jim accompanying him.

They spent time meeting children and their families and joining in with some of the circus-themed activities.

Before he left, the actor, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in George Lucas’s Star Wars prequels, said: “Rachel House will always have a special significance to me.”

Gill Levy, CHAS relationship manager, said: “We’ve had lots of excited children, siblings and parents who were really looking forward to meeting Ewan.

“The look on their faces when he walked in was priceless. We can’t thank Ewan, and his parents enough for taking the time to come and visit us again today.

“It means so much to everyone at Rachel House and it will be such a special memory for them to cherish forever.”
